The other morning, my 4-year-old son asked if he could pick out my yoga outfit for the day. I opened my dresser drawer to reveal a sea of colorless shirts. He sorted past the navy, the New York black, and the other neutrals until he fished out a bright pink top I had completely forgotten about. He looked up at me and said emphatically, "This one, Mama!"
I smiled and told him it was perfect. All day while I was teaching, that little burst of pink made me smile — a wearable reminder of my boy and his instinct to reach straight for the light.
The mind works much the same way. It often takes a bit of effort, or someone we love, to point us toward the brightness that's already there. The darker, more challenging parts of life have a way of crowding out the rest. But the more we train the mind to notice the brighter side of things, the more natural it becomes.
At its heart, yoga and meditation are a training of attention, and with that comes something powerful: the choice of where we focus it.
Today, see if you can direct that focus toward something that brings you joy — a moment to stand in the sunshine, five minutes to dance in your room, or some unhurried time on your mat doing exactly what feels right.
Wishing you moments of joy,
Jenny
